Renovating in Narre Warren, Berwick, Cranbourne or Hampton Park usually leaves you with a pile of old metal. An old hot water system, copper pipe offcuts, brass taps, old wiring, maybe even a split-system air conditioner. Most people’s first thought is to put it all out for hard rubbish. But that’s often not the best option.

What Casey Hard Waste Accepts

City of Casey households get two hard waste collections per calendar year. According to the City of Casey’s hard waste page, your pile must fit within three cubic metres, and individual items shouldn’t be longer than 1.5 metres or heavier than 30 kilograms.

That rules out a lot of renovation metal. Many storage hot water units are taller than 1.5 metres, and a full-size tank can easily weigh more than 30 kilograms. It also uses up one of your two collections for the year.

Metal Has Value

Scrap metal is priced by type, grade and cleanliness. Copper is usually the most valuable metal in a typical renovation pile.

  • Copper pipe and offcuts: clean copper gets the best price.
  • Brass fittings and taps
  • Old hot water systems: older units can contain copper components, and the steel casing still has scrap value.
  • Electrical wiring and cables
  • Air conditioner units and compressors

Put on the nature strip, all of that value goes to someone else. Brought to a scrap yard, it comes back to you.

Safety First

  • Get a licensed plumber to disconnect and drain the hot water system. In Victoria, plumbing work must be done by a licensed plumber.
  • Isolate electrical connections before removing wiring. Get a licensed electrician if you’re unsure.
  • Drain water fully. It’s heavy, and wet loads can be priced lower.

How VIC Copper Recycling Makes It Easy

At VIC Copper Recycling, our yard in Narre Warren South is only a short drive for most Casey residents. We regularly buy renovation metal from local homeowners and tradies. Every load is weighed accurately and priced at current market rates, and our team explains exactly how the price is worked out. Whether you’re dropping off a few copper offcuts or need a pickup for a larger load through our scrap metal collection service, we keep it simple.

A note on payment: under Victorian law, scrap metal dealers can’t pay cash for scrap metal. We pay by electronic transfer, and you’ll need to show photo ID when you sell. Our guide on cash for scrap metal and what’s legal explains why.
